That is, if going clothes free were to be recognized as a basic human right, that one's being naked not just at the beach or at a resort, but also at school or at work or while out running errands/etc. were from tomorrow on completely legal, would you put on a stitch of clothing again if the weather/temperature didn't actually call for it? Furthermore, with going clothes free obviously being an option for people- you couldn't force it on those who don't want to be/go so, that's for sure- would you be willing to be the only one nude in your class? At your workplace? Even if your coworkers and your firm's clients were mostly of the opposite sex and the majority of them stayed clothed? Could you see yourself having a conversation while in the nude with a clothed bank teller, for example? Being stopped by a clothed news reporter from your local TV station and answering some questions on camera while in the nude, knowing that the footage would be shown later on the evening's news? It's easy to say, I think, something like "yeah, if public nudity were legal, I'd go nude," but is your resolve really such that you could be in the possible minority of those doing it? | I wasn't going to say anything, but I haven't seen a convincing argument yet in favor of banning nudity. We have an argument saying that private parts are meant to be covered up because we have been wearing clothes for centuries. This seems to be contradicted by the fact that we are born nude and originally only wore clothing as protection from the elements. Some native tribes living in warm climates have exposed private parts all the time. I guess they didn't get the memo. There is another argument saying that we should keep the law on the books because it would cost tax dollars to change it. This amounts to saying that stupid or outdated laws should stay on the books because its too much bother to change them. Doing something even if it's wrong just because that's how we have always done it doesn't strike me as a very compelling argument. Then we have an argument saying that nudity should be illegal because of the risk of skin cancer. By that reasoning, we should ban bathing suits and outlaw tanning or sunbathing. I'm thinking that if I was out in the sun with my dangly parts exposed, I would be even more inclined to use sunscreen. We also have an argument that nudity should be banned because it would be awkward, especially for guyren. Really? Ever try to keep a 2 year-old from undressing around people? It's just not possible and they don't seem to feel the least bit awkward even if they are the only one without clothes. You would get used to it very quickly if it were legal and commonplace. Exactly who is harmed by seeing nudity? Sure, some people might be unpleasant to look at, but I find it unpleasant to see people wearing loud Hawaiian shirts, but you don't see me trying to outlaw them. Countries that allow public nudity do not have any problem with a drop in morals, increased skin cancer, increased sex crimes, mentally unstable guyren, or a sudden reversion to primal behavior. It's simply a non-issue. The simple fact is that laws banning nudity are based upon cultural customs and no other reason. I can't even conceive of a way in which people would suffer harm from nudity. Now that I have pissed off all the other people who responded to this question, I will move on, but if someone can come up with an argument that demonstrates actual harm from exposure to nudity that isn't based on religion or customs, I would love to hear it. |
